Pipella Law’s Kimber Pipella and Adrienne Staley worked together to coach the Crescent Height’s High School team in two independent mock trials at Calgary’s annual Law Day on April 18th, 2015.
This year, Pipella Law’s team competed in the “Fasken Martineau” mock trial. Calgary’sLaw Day is important for local youth because it gives them the opportunity to moot and learn about judicial proceedings which grants them a better understanding of how a Canadian courtroom and trial are run.
Pipella Law focusses their practice on civil proceedings, in particular, personal injury. The competition was held against other high schools around Calgary. Under the legal guidance of Pipella Law, the high school students represented both an injured Plaintiff and then advocated for the Defendants in two separate mock trials.
The students learned:
- The Difference between Civil and Criminal Trials;
- Courtroom Etiquette;
- How to file a Claim;
- How to Defend a Claim;
- How to Prepare the Plaintiff’s Arguments;
- How to Prepare the Defendants’ Arguments;
- How to Perform the Direct Examination of a Witness;
- How to Perform the Cross-Examination of a Witness; and
- How to Prepare both Parties’ Closing Arguments
